Physician Assistant
Kami Smith-Harris is a Board-Certified Physician Assistant with extensive experience in psychiatry, addiction medicine, and interventional treatments for mental health conditions. She holds a Master of Health Science degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a Bachelor of Science in Business Management with a concentration in Marketing from North Carolina State University.
Kami began her career as a headache specialist before discovering her passion for psychiatry and addiction medicine. Over time, she transitioned from traditional medication management to Interventional Psychiatry, with a special focus on Treatment-Resistant Depression (TRD). She has been involved in ketamine-based treatments for over five years and has significant experience operating esketamine clinics, where she frequently sees fast, meaningful improvements in patients—a deeply rewarding aspect of her work.
Kami recently authored a paper entitled “Unmet Needs in TRD,” set to be published in 2025. She also participated in a national Satellite Media Tour during Mental Health Month (September 2023), conducting more than 20 interviews across television and radio platforms to raise awareness about TRD. Her co-authored article “Winter Blues vs. Clinical Depression (MDD)” was published in multiple publications, including the San Francisco Chronicle.
Her expertise has been featured across several platforms, including:
- ABC11’s Mental Health Toolkit Series
- UNC-Chapel Hill’s Allied Health Sciences: Mental Health During COVID-19
- Guilford Technical Community College’s Mental Health & COVID Lecture Series
Outside of her clinical work, Kami is passionate about mentoring aspiring physician assistants. She enjoys cooking, spending quality time with family and friends, and escaping to the mountains whenever possible. Her mission is to break the stigma surrounding mental health and promote accessible, effective care for all.
